PMEA Composition Program

PMEA is pleased to sponsor a composition program for PMEA members and their students in conjunction with the 2026 PMEA Annual In-service Conference, April 23-25 at the Kalahari Resort & Convention Center in the Poconos. The program is offered for students, elementary through college/university levels as well as for PMEA members who haven’t been published. Selected compositions will be featured during the annual conference.

The purpose of the composition program is to promote and encourage composers of all ages to create music and to explore the way that sounds are put together in an appropriate way. Many future composers are today’s music students and PMEA members, and we are striving to encourage everyone to try their hand at composing.

The “window of opportunity” to complete the application and submit your composition online will be from Monday, September 29 to Wednesday (11:59 p.m.), December 3. All entries must be submitted by December 3, 2025. Complete Program Rules and Criteria are available now. All PMEA members and/or their students are encouraged to submit compositions. A composer may submit multiple compositions; however each one must be written for a different ensemble/genre. A separate application (and $15 application fee) is required for each composition submitted. *Please note that previous composition awardees may not submit a composition in the same genre in which they were recognized in consecutive years, however a composition in a different genre may be submitted (i.e. if a composer was recognized for a piece written for chorus, they would need to submit a piece written for a different ensemble type).
