PMEA News, the association’s professional journal, includes everything from music reviews in a variety of areas to helpful teaching tips and ideas to get you through the school year and much more.
Document Submissions
If you would like to submit an article for possible inclusion in an upcoming journal issue, please send your article submissions to pmeanews@pmea.net and abiyoung@pmea.net. Adherence to submission deadlines is a BIG help in keeping everything on schedule! Documents should be submitted in Word or Google Docs formats. There is no need to also provide a pdf version.
For the file name, please use two or three words from the title, followed by your last name. This helps us keep track of the authorship of articles as they come in. *Please note that due to increased printing costs there will now be three printed issues of the journal (Fall, Winter & Spring) and one digital only issue (Summer).
Submission Deadlines for 2024-25 are:
- Fall Issue – August 5, 2024
- Winter Issue – October 7, 2024
- Spring Issue – January 13, 2025
- Summer Issue (Digital Only) – April 28, 2025
Formatting
Most word processing programs default to left margin justify, and this is fine. Please use 12-point font size and Times New Roman as your font if available. Article text should be single-spaced. Since column space can be limited in any one issue, please do not double space between sentences. Many articles are submitted citing references; those will be forwarded as they appear.
Length
Approximately 1-2 page or about 1000-1200 words is typical. Be concise!
Additional Information
Each submission should also include the following:
- A headshot photo for inclusion with the article
- A biography sentence or two, at the most (i.e. John Smith teaches elementary instrumental music in the Pleasantville SD. He can be reached at (email address).
- Your name & organization in your submission
Please complete the PMEA News Article Copyright Release Form (24-25) Only one form is needed per contributor for the 2024-25 journal year.
Articles will be peer reviewed by the PMEA News Review Panel. The panel consists of a group of volunteer PMEA members from all levels who, by virtue of their careers, have been chosen to lend their time and expertise to the News. The panel looks for articles to be relevant and of value to the membership.
Helpful hints to increase the likelihood of publication:
- Include clear ideas that can be implemented quickly and easily
- Writing should be concise with clear & powerful purpose
- It is helpful to include pictures, illustrations, diagrams or charts to enhance the content of the article; do not use stock pictures
- Include references and/or sources, or “for further reading” citations
The Review Panel may suggest edits or may ask for additional clarification. It is also possible the panel may ask for long articles to be broken into two parts. NOTE: Multi-installment articles should be submitted in full, prior to publication of Part 1 to allow for planning for future issues.
